Personally I like the afternoons, the light is so divine and its soft, meaning you get a warm glow on the photos, also no one is squinting at the sun beam, the colder months also work great for photos, the kids huddle in a little closer for cuddles: mums and dads are relaxed in their comfy warm  clothes.. and well Winter is my favourite season as well – or at least the start when the leaves are all changing!

You can also take awesome photos first thing in the mornings, if you are replying on the outdoors, the light is also soft with a little kick of morning freshness! If the middle of the day is your only time spare then we can totally work with that as well by finding and awesome location (blog post coming soon on locations).

In Brisbane we are are really lucky to have so many awesome old buildings, awesome graffiti work and magical parks which all mostly provide shade, so if the middle of the day is your prime time then you won’t miss out any!

I remember when I was in college studying photography they used to advise that afternoon was the best: but with my experience so far, new born babes and little ones are on their own schedule, they are not worried about the best lighting. They rule the world! hehe… Thats why you could always think about a shoot at home as well, that way EVERYONE in the whole family is comfortable and the lighting is not a big issue and also I like to play with toys… So I am always happy to come to peoples houses! hehe…

This place is magic on earth…  You can tour around in a group, pretty much free to roam, they keep you together but as for taking a photo it was great, no-one was in your way, you can take your time. As you stroll through with a tour guide to give you a little history and tell you some cool things you wouldn’t know from just seeing the movie. This place is a photographer’s dream, the tiny houses, the little details, the magical feeling in the air. I loved it! If any of you get the chance to head to NZ, this is well worth the money xx

I can only speak from experience, but in the first 10 days are the best, the baby is still very sleepy and can be moved into cute little positions. After this date, I would say within the first month is still a good time, the baby is moving more but is still adjusting, after this don’t get any photos until your baby is sitting up! I mean you can I have just found that the babies are not so much “new born” anymore.

Also try and find someone who comes to your home, it makes the experience that little less daunting and the baby is so new and getting used to its environment, plus you get to put it in that cute little beanie your granny knitted When I first started taking photos of newborn babies, mums used to come into my studio, then I had a request to head to someone’s house and I have never looked back. Mum and bub are much happier at home, it’s been a big few days for both of them and nobody feels like washing their hair and leaving the house.

Keep on hand any cute baby blankets and little outfits you might like to have your baby photographed in as well, your baby does not always have to be naked to look cute and any little props won’t go astray!

Its best to match colours a little, not a lot, so as example, if you are in a blue, put your husband in a blue or a grey or something that compliments, you need colours that work together but you don’t have to match.

Avoid putting any clothes on that are promoting anything, so Dora shirts or football shirts, stay clear, just so that when you look back years later, everyone isn’t in something they may now not like and just so that the prints don’t distract from the photos as well. Prints work though if its say a floral dress, and then match everyone to the dress with plain colours to compliment – click on this and you can see an example of how to dress a bigger family in colour, this idea here is nice too if you are wanting to match a little more.

Dressing for photos does not have to be daunting, just make sure you can have loads of fun and feel super comfortable in what you are wearing.

We all have certain styles’ as individuals and the same applies as a family unit. If you live in the country, you possibly would prefer to get photos there and not against lets say a brick wall in the city! I think they best idea for photography is when you get photos taken in a place that you are comfortable with. I take photos of a lot of families at their home and also out and about in places that suit them and their style.

Your style might be a casual hang out in the park, with the kids maybe bringing their bikes and having a ride while getting some photos done, or you might like that afternoon light at your local beach! Beaches and parks are great places to have photos, because its a really relaxed environment, everyone is feeling nice and casual as its not a full on place with lights and all the such. Other places could be an alley way down town, that has an old brick wall or some graffiti if that is your style, I love shooting with old buildings as well so if you have a love for architecture then you might want to consider that. Another nice idea, is at your very home, the kids are always comfortable at home, and you get that homely feeling from shooting at your house as well, and if you ever move, not only do have photos of a certain time in your life, you have photos that help save that memory of where you were at in life as well. So many options!!!

The other thing to keep in mind when getting photography ideas is what to wear – I get asked this question almost every time I take photos! I will, I promise, do a blog post on outfits soon, so that you all have an idea of what to wear but in short, its best to get your colour palette right. If you and dad are in soft colours then put the kids in complimenting colours that could be bold or soft! If mum is in a floral dress, then match the other clothes around that. If you are super stuck then I am always happy to help with ideas to help you pick clothes, after all these photos are going up on the lounge room wall – you want it too look the best!!!

Outdoors is always a great way to capture this moment, late afternoon is divine with the lighting and gives a good way to get some nice shadows in there and light up the tummy, maternity photos don’t have to be all doom and gloom, its such an awesome time for a mum so it’s always nice to capture that so that you can remember how nice it was, as no one like to just remember the morning sickness. If you are after something a little more intimate, than your own home is a great place for that, I know I feel most comfortable at home, and I imagine you do as well. Maternity photos don’t have to be something scary!

I also work with a makeup artist who does some pretty amazing belly painting (not the scary ones) so if that is something you are looking for, I can help you with that as well.
